As the weather begins to warm up and flowers start to bloom, Laramie Interfaith’s long-running annual fundraiser will also come back around.
The nonprofit organization is hosting the Sue Wedel Walk Run Wheel Memorial 5K fundraiser in honor of former Interfaith board member Sue Wedel starting at 1 p.m. on April 28.
The event, formerly known as the Hunger Walk, has been a late-April tradition in the Gem City of the Plains for more than 30 years, dating back to the years soon after Laramie Interfaith itself was founded. Wedel was a long-time board member and participant in several nonprofit organizations in and out of Laramie. After she passed away in June 2015, the Laramie Interfaith board decided to rename the annual event in her honor.
“After Wedel passed, I had a number of board members who approached the family and wanted to rename it after her,” said Josh Watanabe, executive director at Laramie Interfaith. “(They wanted to) honor her service to us and the family was happy to have it done.”
The 5K will start at the Laramie Interfaith, located at 712 E. Canby St. and will follow a path designed to be accessible for all participants. Individuals are invited to cover the route in a variety of ways — run, walk, push a stroller, walk a dog, ride a bike or roll a wheelchair.
“We’ll have a race map printed out by one of our board members,” Watanabe said. “It usually goes through the (LaBonte) Park and then at (Reynolds Street), then turning back. We have a board member who’s a running fanatic, so she goes out and measures the distance and creates the map.”
Participants can register for a 5K, 3K or the 0.5K Slacker Race. Registration costs $30 and will include a T-shirt. All proceeds made from the walk will go toward stocking the food pantry, providing rental assistance, emergency housing, utility help and fund operations at Laramie Interfaith.
