As a resident of Wyoming, I appreciate U.S. Sen. Cynthia Lummis’ recent committee vote supporting the PROVE IT Act.
Wyoming energy, energy generated in our state, is cleaner and more efficient than foreign producers — Lummis, R-Wyo., is right to want to gather this data and use it to our advantage. That’s what the PROVE IT Act would do, and it’s a good idea.
It’s a good idea because the European Union and the United Kingdom plan to penalize high-polluting countries that undercut their domestic manufacturers with cheaper, carbon-heavy products.
However, this should work to our advantage as we know our products are cleaner. The concern is whether American manufacturing excellence be calculated appropriately and rewarded fairly. We should be collating our own data, so we have a say in how our goods are calculated and don’t allow other countries to decide for us.
We need common-sense legislation to fast track American energy production and make it easier to remain a global leader. This means taking a proactive approach to deals with foreign nations and being prepared to refute exaggerated statistics that may be used to charge exorbitant tariffs or bow out of a contract with American companies.
