Gray responds to veto letters from Gov. Mark Gordon
CHEYENNE — Acknowledging receipt of Gov. Mark Gordon’s veto letters addressed to him in his capacity as Wyoming Secretary of State and in accordance with Article 4, Section 8 of the Wyoming State Constitution, Secretary of State Chuck Gray issued a response noting his disagreement with many of the vetoes in a letter.
“While acknowledging receipt of these vetoes, our republic is built on discourse and debate,” Gray wrote. “In this vein, I wanted to respond to some of the points made in your letters that I disagree with as well as express disagreement with many of your veto actions.
“Wyoming can and should lead the way in providing meaningful property tax relief, protecting the unborn, defending our Second Amendment rights from tyranny at all levels, ensuring a way to fight back against attacks on our core industries, and guaranteeing that our only land grant university represents the values of Wyomingites, not leftist elites. Unfortunately, your vetoes do not do that, and, in that way, set us in the wrong direction.”
On March 22, Gordon vetoed a bill that would have erected significant barriers to abortion, should it remain legal in the state. He also vetoed a bill that would have made it legal to carry concealed firearms in public schools, hospitals and government meetings, one property tax bill and line-item vetoed a section of the budget that defunds the University of Wyoming’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
