Ashley Marie Balthazar, 21, was sentenced to jail Monday after violating the terms of her probation for a 2014 felonious restraint conviction.
On Oct. 23, 2014, the defendant was sentenced to six months in jail and three years of supervised probation, with an underlying 2-5 year sentence, after threatening her former husband with a knife. She originally faced three other felony charges — kidnapping, aggravated assault and battery and possession of a deadly weapon with — unlawful intent, but the state agreed to dismiss these counts in exchange for a guilty plea. Balthazar acknowledged in court Monday she absconded from supervision, in violation of the rules of her probation, claiming she moved and lost contact with her probation officer. District Court Judge Jeffrey Donnell imposed another 180-day split sentence and ordered the defendant to pay more than $2,900 in extradition fees.
According to court documents, Laramie Police Department officers responded to an East Beaufort Street apartment July 13, 2014, following a report of a physical domestic disturbance. Witnesses reported hearing screaming and yelling coming from the apartment, as well as noises that sounded like shattering glass and furniture breaking, and told police at one point Balthazar appeared to be locked out of the apartment and entered it using physical force.
In an interview, Balthazar reportedly said she and her ex-husband had an argument that day and he choked and hit her, according to the documents.
The ex-husband reported Balthazar kept him inside his residence and threatened to kill him and his dogs with a 6-inch kitchen knife, documents state. When asked about inconsistencies between the two accounts, Balthazar reportedly admitted to pointing the knife and threatening to stab her ex-husband and the dogs, according to the documents. She acknowledged her ex-husband wasn’t actually hitting her and she had the opportunity to leave instead of making the threats.
