A new bike map that’s now available online lays out the best routes for two-wheeled travel in the Laramie area. The map shows bike lanes, shared-use paths, dismount zones and trail access points.
It also shows the location of bus stops, bus routes, bike shops, air pumps and maintenance facilities.
The new Schoolyard trail system just east of town is on the map, along with information about popular out-of-town routes for road and mountain biking.
The map was created by Laramie BikeNet in collaboration with other community partners.
BikeNet’s Dan McCoy said the idea for the map came after Laramie was designated a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists last year. Laramie was awarded the bronze level, with a map noted as one way to improve the score.
“We have some room for improvement,” McCoy said. “One of those areas we identified was that we didn’t have a bike map developed for the entire community. That seemed like a pretty obvious and easy thing for BikeNet to complete.”
BikeNet received grant funding from the Albany County Tourism Board and the city of Laramie’s Community Partners program for the project. The club enlisted graphic designer Jessica Perry, who worked with information provided the city and the Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center.
“She put the whole map together and included on it some of the classic road rides and some of the opportunities for mountain biking as well, so it hits the whole range of cycling opportunities in the community,” McCoy said.
The map also includes tips for safety and etiquette, along with a list of Wyoming traffic laws, which also apply to cyclists.
Streets in town that are not recommended for cyclists — Third Street, Grand Avenue and the western stretch of Snowy Range Road — are highlighted in yellow.
McCoy said cyclists aren’t prohibited from those roadways, but the high traffic volume, narrow shoulders and lack of bike lanes make them more dangerous.
“It’s just really scary to see so many people with their heads buried in their cell phones while driving on a really busy, narrow road,” he said. “We really try to encourage people to take routes that are going to be safer for cyclists.”
With its remaining grant money, BikeNet plans to print a few hundred copies of the map.
McCoy said other organizations and businesses will be welcome to print copies for their customers or put them on their websites.
McCoy said feedback about the project is welcome through BikeNet.
“We’re hoping to make cycling more enjoyable and inform the community about where to do so safely,” he said.
