CHEYENNE — Two of the top aquatic teams in the state went head-to-head Thursday night as the Laramie Plainsmen swimming and diving team picked up a 98-84 dual win against Cheyenne East Thunderbirds at T-Bird Pool.
It was the second dual of the season after an earlier 100-71 win against Cheyenne Central on Dec. 16 in Laramie. Both duals also count as South Conference victories.
“Normally our times aren’t quite as good at the Tuesday and Thursday meets because we lift for an hour in the morning and the muscles are really fatigued,” LHS veteran head coach Tom Hudson said. “We really got up for it, swam pretty hard and didn’t want them to get this victory. Even though they were tired, the times are still way ahead of this time last year and that’s encouraging.”
The Plainsmen also picked up two more state qualifiers, both in the diving event when sophomore Bryan Barry (181.15) and freshman Garrett Kirk (194.30) broke the 175-point barrier needed to qualify. The Plainsmen now have 18 state qualifiers.
“Both those guys have been very close the last couple of weeks and got it done with career nights, which is encouraging with all four of our divers qualified now,” Hudson said.
Laramie won seven of 12 events, including a sweep of the top three spots in the 100-yard freestyle. Plainsman junior Mike Hudson touched the pad first in 52.99 seconds, followed by sophomores Gentry Chakmakian (53.19) and Sven Lundell (53.64).
“It was a very close race with Mike, Gentry and Sven neck-and-neck all the way through and ending up touching just bang, bang, bang,” Hudson said. “That was the turning point as the meet was close to that point. The sweep kind of secured the victory for us.”
Other Plainsmen winning individual events was sophomore Rudi Hanekamp in the 200 freestyle (1:59.17), junior Derek Campbell in diving (275.70), freshman Augie Bress in the 500 freestyle (5:49.39) and sophomore Matt Gern in the 100 backstroke (1:04.19).
“There was also another big win tonight by senior Eli Kinney-Lang, who swam really well in the 100 backstroke,” Hudson said. “He really wanted that race tonight and swam a season-best time of 1:02.25 and won that race going away. That race really stood out for me. You won’t see it in the results because it was exhibitioned and not scored for sportsmanship reasons.”
Laramie also won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:35.58 with Hanekamp, senior Jack McClendon, Chakmakian and Hudson taking turns off the block.
Justin Hastings of Cheyenne East was the only multi-event winner when he finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:02.34) and 100 butterfly (55.22).
With enough points already tallied for the dual win to be firmly decided, Laramie exhibitioned the final three events in the 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay.
The next action for the Plainsmen is a dual with the Gillette Camels at noon on Saturday at the Laramie Community Recreation Center.
“According to the ‘Tom Hudson poll,’ I rank Gillette first, Laramie second, Cheyenne East third and Kelly Walsh fourth in the state,” Hudson said. “You are going to see a ton of really close races, and I expect Gillette to win most of the races. But the meet is going to be won or lost in the second, third and fourth places.”
