Laramie’s New Year’s baby has arrived

With a due date of Dec. 31, Seth and Tarita Harju were hoping that their child, Davin Lee, would be born before the end of the year so they would be eligible for a 2008 tax deduction. But while 2008 came and went without a birth, little Davin would prove to be lucky anyway.

“When it didn’t happen on the 30th, we said well, maybe we’ll have the New Year’s baby,” mother Tarita said.

At 10:58 p.m. Jan. 2, Tarita and Seth became proud parents for the second time. And while it may not have been on New Year’s Day, it was good enough for Davin to be the first baby born at Ivinson Memorial Hospital in 2009.

For being Laramie’s first-born in 2009, Davin received a $1,000 scholarship to the University of Wyoming along with a myriad of quilts, toys and other baby-related items.

“We’ve actually only lived in Laramie for a year, so we didn’t know they did anything for it,” Tarita said.

But as soon as they went to IMH on Dec. 31, the helpful staff let them know more than once that they were the front-runners for 2009’s New Year baby.

“The staff were definitely very excited and brought it up every hour,” Tarita said. “We were actually at the hospital for 24 hours before we had him, so we had a lot of people come in and say, “you’re going to be the New Year’s baby,” but after 24 hours we weren’t even sure if he’d ever come out.”

After waiting for more than 24 hours, the Harjus decided to induce labor so their midwife, Esther Gilman-Kehrer, would be able to deliver the baby before going out of town on Sunday.

Weighing 6 pounds and 14 ounces and being more than 20 inches long, Tarita said that Davin looks a lot like his brother, Nolan, at birth.

“We think their baby pictures look just about the same,” Tarita said. “He doesn’t look much like Nolan does now, but when Nolan was born, he looked just like him.”
